Attersee situated in the famous Salzkammergut region was the summer retreat of many famous artists, musicians and writers since the early 19th century and has kept this attraction also nowadays.

Artists Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt and Emilie Flöge spent all summers between 1900 and 1916 at the lake. You will find the lake and the surroundings on Klimt’s most important paintings.

Music festivals

Nowadays artists like Anselm Kiefer, Christian Ludwig Attersee and many others enjoy the beauty, the silence and inspiration of the region.

Gustav Mahler spent three summers in Steinbach in his tiny little composing house at the lakeside. He worked on his 2nd and 3rd symphony. 

Johannes Brahms, Bruno Walter, Maria Jeritza, Friedrich Gulda and nowadays Nikolaus Harnonourt, Franz Welser Möst or Heinrich Schiff only to name some of them, came to enjoy this beautiful area  for vacations  but also  to work for the different music festivals in the area. The most famous one is « Salzburg summer festival ». Some of them taking place in villages around the lake.
